Term 6 Course Descriptions
The working life of a professional designer includes more than just applying techniques, aesthetics, and concepts. Designers are frequently faced with various business and legal issues including rights ownership over copyrighted works and other kinds of intellectual property and must consider which projects to accept or reject for practical or ethical concerns. Should a new designer expect to perform work on spec to demonstrate their capabilities? If you design a character for a customer鈥檚 website and they then use that character to sell thousands of t-shirts, are you entitled to remuneration for the added revenue? Should you use your design talents to help clients who may be famous companies here but run sweatshops in other countries? The answers to many of these questions are individual to each designer, but they should be based on a sound exploration and understanding of the issues involved. Students in the Business, Law, and Ethics course will explore and discuss current ethical issues affecting the design industry. Students will explore and learn about basic legal principles that affect designers in the area of intellectual property (with a special focus on copyright law) and contract law and negotiation. Finally, students will address and consider ethical situations and dilemmas that relate to the business of design including freelancing versus studio environment, managing clients, sub-contracting work, and defining a professional set of practices and ethics. This course is taught using a combination of lecture, workshop and seminar formats. Individual instructors with expertise in each of the key areas will address the major topics of concern and provide students with an opportunity to discuss, debate, and question different approaches to business, law, and ethics in design.
