What Does a Sound Designer Do? A Career Guide to Film, Games & Theatre

A sound designer creates and shapes the audio world of a production. That could mean recording a door slam, rebuilding dialogue that didn't survive a location shoot, performing Foley, designing an impossible machine, mixing a scene or making footsteps react correctly when a player crosses from concrete onto gravel.

The job changes quite a bit depending on where you do it.

On a film, you're usually working against picture. The scene happens in a fixed order, so you can shape the soundtrack around it. Games are different: the player decides when things happen, which means the audio often has to behave like a system rather than a finished timeline. In theatre, there is another variable entirely鈥攖he room. Speakers, microphones, performers, acoustics and live cues can all become part of the design.

That variation is why professional theatre guidance cautions against treating 鈥渟ound designer鈥 as one universal job description. The work changes with the production.

If you're considering sound design as a career, the useful question isn't just 鈥What software should I learn?鈥 First figure out what kind of production you want to make sound for.

The basic listening and recording skills travel well between them. The workflow doesn't always.

What does the job actually involve?

A surprising amount of sound design starts with an ordinary question: what should this moment sound like?

Sometimes realism is the answer. If a character closes a heavy wooden door, the designer might record one, search a library, or combine several recordings until the weight feels right.

Other times there isn't a real-world answer. A machine, creature or environment may exist only in the story. Recordings then become ingredients rather than finished effects鈥攜ou can pitch them, stretch them, layer them, reverse them, distort them or use only a small piece of the original.

StudioBinder's overview of the profession similarly spans sound effects, dialogue, Foley, mixing and other audio disciplines rather than treating sound design as a single task.

And then there is the part beginners don't always picture: organizing sessions, fixing noisy recordings, chasing revisions, exporting the right files, keeping track of versions and making sure your great new effect doesn't bury the dialogue.

The interesting sound matters. So does getting it through the production.

Film and television

On most film projects, audio post is built against picture, although exactly where 鈥渟ound designer鈥 ends and dialogue editing, Foley or mixing begins depends on the size of the sound team.

The work can include dialogue cleanup, ADR, Foley, effects, backgrounds and mixing. 色狼窝's current Sound Design for Visual Media program reflects that separation in its film/TV training, with dialogue, Foley/ADR, effects, ambiences and post-mixing treated as distinct parts of the workflow.

Smaller projects are usually less tidy.

Toronto sound designer Jack Ewing, for example, describes working across dialogue and sound-effects editing, ADR, Foley, mixing and mastering.
On one project, so much of the original location sound was unusable that the soundtrack had to be reconstructed with ADR, Foley and effects.

That's a better picture of the profession than 鈥渟ound designers make sound effects.鈥 Sometimes you're creating. Sometimes you're repairing. Often you're doing both before lunch.

Games
Games introduce a problem film doesn't have: the audience is changing the timing.

Take footsteps.

In a movie, you can see every step on the timeline. You know exactly when the foot lands and what surface it's hitting.

A game may need to answer several questions on the fly. Is the character walking or sprinting? Are they on wood, gravel or metal? Which footstep variation played last? How far away is the listener? Has the player entered a different environment?

Nobody manually places every footstep in advance. The audio system has to make those choices while the game is running.

That is where tools such as middleware come in. A game sound designer may create the recordings, edit them and then build the behaviours that decide when and how they play. 色狼窝's current game-audio training includes Wwise events, soundbanks, states and RTPCs, attenuation, triggers, parameters, optimization and real-time tuning.

And this produces a slightly odd situation for beginners: you can have an excellent folder full of sounds and still not have a working game soundtrack.

Implementation is part of the work.

Theatre
Theatre brings sound into a physical room.

The designer may create atmospheres and effects, work with music, plan speaker placement, choose or configure microphones, program cues and spend time in rehearsals adjusting all of it once performers are actually in the space.

The Association of Sound Designers describes the theatre role as covering both the designed audio and the practical question of what the audience hears in the auditorium.

There is also a lot more coordination than the phrase 鈥渟ound design鈥 suggests. Production guidance from Appalachian State includes script analysis, design meetings, sound plots, speaker planning, cue creation and rehearsals among the designer's responsibilities.

Film and game sound are not the same workflow

The first few steps can look similar. You listen, record, edit and make creative decisions.

After that, things start to separate.

On a film, you might receive a scene, spot what it needs, clean the dialogue, build backgrounds, add effects or Foley, revise against picture and eventually send the work toward the final mix.

That sequence isn't as clean in practice as it looks on paper. Picture changes. A director decides an effect is too obvious. The beautifully detailed ambience you spent an hour building turns out to be distracting under dialogue.

Back you go.

Game audio has another loop. After you create the asset, you still have to decide how it behaves, implement it, play the game, hear what went wrong and change it.

A sound that is exciting the first time may be unbearable the 150th time. A weapon effect that sounds enormous by itself might make important gameplay cues impossible to hear. An ambience may be technically correct and still give the player no sense of where they are.

So the game workflow tends to be more like:

design 鈫 implement 鈫 play 鈫 listen 鈫 change 鈫 play again.

That's one of the biggest differences between linear and interactive sound, and it's worth understanding early if you're choosing between the two.

Where does sound design stop and the other audio jobs begin?

Not always in the same place.

Job titles overlap, especially on smaller productions, but each role usually has a different centre of gravity.

A large film may separate several of those jobs. A small short film may not have that luxury, and one person could handle a large part of post sound.

Games have the same issue. At one studio, 鈥渟ound designer鈥 may mostly mean asset creation. Somewhere else, implementation is part of the role. A technical sound designer may be expected to go much deeper into tools, scripting and systems.

Titles help. The job description helps more.

How do people actually get into sound design?

There isn't one approved route.

You can learn a lot on your own. Recording, editing, synthesis, critical listening, DAWs and even tools such as Wwise are accessible without being employed by a studio.

The awkward part comes later: how do you prove you can work on a production when nobody has hired you to work on one yet?

That question shows up repeatedly in beginner discussions around game audio and adjacent audio careers. People often have music or technical skills but little project work that a potential collaborator can actually evaluate.

The first useful project usually doesn't need to be large.

Redesign a short scene. Record and cut the Foley for a minute of animation. Put audio into a tiny playable game. Work on a student film. Build a small sound library and then actually use it in something.

A two-minute project can tell you more than weeks of isolated tutorials if another person is waiting for you to deliver it.

That part is uncomfortable in a useful way. Somebody changes the edit. They don't like your first idea. They need a new version tonight. Your naming system suddenly makes no sense to anyone except you.

That's production experience too.

Getting the first credits

Don't wait for the title 鈥淪ound Designer鈥 before you start making work that demonstrates sound design.

Early credits may come from student productions, small indie games, animation projects, short films or other collaborations. What matters is that the work creates evidence:

  • there was a problem;
  • you were responsible for part of it;
  • you made decisions;
  • the finished project shows the result.

Eventually that evidence matters more than the exercise itself.

Your portfolio needs to prove more than 鈥淚 can make sounds鈥

A polished demo reel is useful, but the person reviewing it is often trying to answer a second question:

What exactly did you do?

That can get murky very quickly on collaborative work.

If you redesigned a film scene, say whether you handled dialogue, effects, Foley, ADR, ambience or the mix. If you recorded the source material yourself, mention it. A before-and-after version can help because successful post-production work often disappears into the scene.

Game-audio portfolios need another layer.

A finished gameplay video shows the result, but it doesn't necessarily show that you understand implementation. Where possible, show some of the system behind it: events, states, parameters, variations, middleware or engine behaviour.

Suppose you designed footsteps.

鈥淐reated footstep SFX鈥 doesn't tell the viewer much.

A better explanation is that repeated footsteps were becoming obvious, so you built multiple variations, grouped them by surface and connected the game state to the relevant sound set. Now the viewer knows what you heard, what you changed and how you made it work.

That's useful evidence.

And it doesn't require a blockbuster game.

Do you need a degree or sound design school?

Not for every job.

Plenty of technical knowledge can be learned independently. If someone is disciplined, has access to the right tools and can find collaborators, self-directed learning can go surprisingly far.

The harder question is what you can realistically reproduce alone.

Regular critique is one thing. Facilities are another. Then there are production deadlines and collaborators who need your work to fit with theirs.

Structured programs can bundle those things together. 色狼窝's current 12-month Sound Design for Visual Media diploma, for example, combines film/TV post-production with interactive game audio, using Pro Tools and Wwise and including collaborative game projects plus final portfolio work.

Independent learning has obvious advantages too. It is flexible, usually cheaper, and lets you spend six weeks obsessing over one area if that's where your interest takes you.

Neither path saves you from having to make good work.

And school doesn't guarantee a job. What it can provide is a setting where you repeatedly have to record, edit, implement, revise and deliver鈥攚ith other people depending on the result.

That distinction is much more useful than arguing that one route is universally 鈥渂etter.鈥

What is the work鈥攁nd the pay鈥攁ctually like?

There are salaried sound designers, freelancers and people who move between both. The balance depends on the industry.

The work also changes from week to week. Someone in post may disappear into dialogue editing for days. A game sound designer could spend one morning designing an asset and the afternoon troubleshooting why it behaves incorrectly in a build. Theatre gets especially intense once a production moves into technical rehearsals.

Deadline pressure isn't an exception to the job. It is part of it.

Pay is harder to summarize cleanly because the same title can represent quite different work. Canada's Job Bank currently reports a national median of C$31.25 per hour for its sound-designer occupational profile. British Columbia's published median is C$37.37 per hour, and the Lower Mainland鈥揝outhwest median is C$38.00. The wage data use a 2023鈥2024 reference period and were updated in November 2025.

There is a caveat worth keeping beside those numbers: Job Bank maps 鈥渟ound designer鈥 into the broader NOC 53123 group. These are labour-market benchmarks, not a promise of what a particular game studio, theatre production or film-post employer will pay.

Freelance rates are even harder to flatten into one number because workload, project length, reputation and gaps between contracts all matter.

If you're comparing jobs, the title alone isn't enough. Look at what the person is actually expected to deliver.

Study Sound Design for Film, TV and Games at 色狼窝

A few common questions

Is a sound designer the same as a sound engineer?
Not quite, although smaller productions can blur the boundary. Sound design is usually more concerned with what the production should sound like and how that sound supports the experience. Engineering leans more heavily toward recording, signal flow, technical quality and mixing.

Do game sound designers need to code?
Not every role requires production-level programming. Some game-audio positions do expect technical familiarity, though, and even creative sound designers benefit from understanding events, states, parameters, middleware and how the game engine talks to the audio system. 色狼窝's current curriculum includes Wwise alongside introductory Python foundations.

Can you become a sound designer without a degree?
Yes. There isn't one mandatory educational route. The real test is whether you can build the craft and show finished work that demonstrates your role in a production.

What should a beginner put in a sound-design portfolio?
A few strong projects are enough to start. Show the finished work, explain your exact contribution and include process or implementation evidence when it helps the viewer understand what you actually did.
